Hexagram 10: Treading (履)
Hexagram 10, Treading, joins Lake in the lower trigram with Heaven above. As a cultural image of change, it draws attention to “moving attentively through sensitive terrain.” It does not determine the future; it offers an ordered perspective from which a present situation can be examined more carefully.
Lower trigram
☱ Lake (兑)
Upper trigram
☰ Heaven (乾)
Reflection focus
moving attentively through sensitive terrain
This hexagram’s particular change theme
Lake lies beneath Heaven: openness moves within a stronger field and must therefore attend to rules, consequences, and sensitive boundaries.
For Treading, this leads to the reflection focus “moving attentively through sensitive terrain.” It names a concrete tension that can be observed, not a predetermined event.
Structure of lines and trigrams
The six lines are read from bottom to top. This figure contains 5 solid Yang lines and 1 divided Yin line. The lower three form ☱ Lake (兑); the upper three form ☰ Heaven (乾). Their relationship creates the distinct structure of this hexagram.
Below, movement begins through exchange and response; above, Heaven asks for a clear and accountable direction. In Treading, this does not create a static balance: the movement below has to meet the condition above. That relationship gives “moving attentively through sensitive terrain” a concrete direction.
The distinctive tension is that Lake initially performs a different task from Heaven. Emphasizing only one side misses the change taking place between impulse and environment.
Concrete situations and a likely misunderstanding
This image can be especially revealing in uncertainty and risk, boundaries and self-protection, and a pending decision. In those settings, observable behavior, agreements, and consequences matter more than reading the hexagram name as an event prediction.
A concrete misunderstanding would be: “Caution means avoiding every movement out of fear.” The figure does not establish that claim. It is more useful to test it against observable behavior, the course of events, and consequences for the people involved.
Limits of interpretation
This hexagram cannot prove another person’s thoughts or intentions and does not promise a particular outcome. It is not a substitute for medical or psychotherapeutic care, legal counsel, financial advice, or another professional service. In immediate danger or a severe crisis, concrete qualified support matters more than symbolic interpretation.
